MetroWest Daily News : Electric cars: Gaining buzz and traction

When David McCarthy was ready to replace his aging, conventional 2004 car, he opted for something different.

The Hopkinton resident bought the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric car, and more than a year later, McCarthy said he is thrilled with its performance.

“Every day, I can drive in (to work in Natick) and drive home purely on battery, yet on weekends if I want a longer trip, I don’t have to have another car,” McCarthy said, noting the car uses gasoline if it exceeds its electric range. “It has been a great experience.”

And McCarthy is not alone in buying an electric car. The number of electric vehicles registered in Massachusetts has increased from 946 in June 2012 to 1,656 in June 2013 and 1,757 as of September. There are around 4.9 million registered vehicles in the state, according to state data.
