Marina gets two electric vehicle charging stations

Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado always wanted to cut a gasoline hose.

The electric car-driving mayor got his wish on Tuesday as he and others dedicated two charging stations for vehicles that use electricity — substituting a short length of fuel hose for the obligatory ribbon to cut.

“This really speaks to Marina’s commitment to electric vehicles,” said Monterey County Supervisor Jane Parker.

The grant-funded Marina charging stations bring the number of refueling spots to 32 in Monterey County. Capable of handling two vehicles apiece simultaneously, they are on the east side of the city’s community development office, 209 Cypress Ave.

With charging stations less than a block away from busy Del Monte Boulevard, city and business representative hope they will attract electric vehicle owners who could charge their rides while dining or doing business in Marina.

City Manager Layne Long, who told about 50 people in attendance that he woke up Tuesday knowing “this is going to be a green day,” said the city is looking for a second site for a charging station. Parker said she hopes the second site can be at the Marina Library.
