The city is hoping you’ll get a charge out of its latest effort to go green.

By the end of the year, officials plan to install South Florida’s first electric vehicle charging stations that will be powered with wind turbines. Set for Mills Pond Park, the four new stations are sure to be noticed.

The wind turbines – with their curved, intertwining blades – look more like art sculptures than mechanical devices. And sitting on poles about 55 feet in the air, they’ll be visible from Interstate 95.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for education and outreach,” Assistant City Manager Susanne Torriente said. “The more we can look at renewable energy options and alternatives, I think that’s what the public wants.”

Car owners can top off their batteries while playing a game of softball or picnicking with friends at the park, located on Northwest Ninth Avenue between Sunrise and Oakland Park boulevards.
