Electric buses still on city’s radar

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis said Wednesday he’ll have an announcement soon about a possible replacement for the electric buses the city had once intended to buy from Chinese company BYD.

Francis said he is “in discussions” with other companies. “I’ll have more to say in a couple weeks.”

Last year, the city signed a letter of intent to buy 10 electric buses from BYD. Francis had been trying to get the company to establish an exclusive manufacturing plant in Windsor.

Earlier this year, the company established a plant in Lancaster, California to supply buses to the Long Beach Transit authority. “The characterization was, Windsor you missed out,” Francis said of media reports at the time.

But in recent weeks, it was learned that BYD’s zero-emissions bus did not pass inspection in California.

According to reports, the bus was heavier than specified, causing concerns about damage to roadways. A bus made in China failed federally-mandated testing, with cracks appearing on the rear end of the bus. The company countered that it was a welding problem that could be fixed.
