Charging stations cost Colwood less than $45 so far this year – Victoria News – Mobile Edition

Juan de Fuca library has far and away the most popular vehicle charging station in Colwood.

City staff took a look at 2013 usage of the six electric vehicle charging stations installed in the municipality.

The library station saw just over 194 kilowatt hours of energy go into vehicles.

Second place is one of the chargers at city hall, which saw 28 hours of use, totaling 77 kilowatt hours.

Mayor Carol Hamilton said when considering the number of electric vehicles in the area at this time, the numbers are good for a first year.

“It’s no surprise in the numbers. … It’s all in being part of the alternative and supporting other technologies that are not doing the greenhouse gas emissions.”

The only charging station not included in the study is the second one at the library, which currently has a problem with the display and is awaiting servicing.

Average stays for users are between 54 minutes and an hour, the report says. One of the park and ride chargers has an average use of two hours.

One observation in the report is that with pairs of chargers it seems the right hand charger is more popular.

In total, usage of all the stations has cost the city $44.86 in energy costs. The stations themselves were paid for through the Solar Colwood program and funds from the federal government.
