2014 Mercedes-Benz XL spied as a plug-in hybrid

These are the first spy pics showing the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class XL in the plug-in hybrid guise.

While the author of these photographs says the car in question is the Maybach-replacing Pullman version, we beg to differ as we believe this is the extra-long wheelbase S-Class which will be positioned above the current long-wheelbase model and below the Pullman. The prototype spotted had a plug-in hybrid arrangement and we assume it’s the one taken from the 2014 S500 Plug-In Hybrid.

As a consequence, we expect to find a V6 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine offering 328 bhp (245 kW) and an electric motor providing 107 bhp (80 kW). It should enable the 2014 S-Class XL plug-in hybrid to return 78.4 mpg US (94.1 mpg UK or 3 liters / 100 km) and should be able to cover an all-electric range of up to 18.6 miles (30 km).

The car will probably need around 5.5 seconds to complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run before topping out at 155 mph (250 km/h). It will come with a choice of four driving modes: Hybrid, E-Mode, E-Save and Charge. While Hybrid and E modes are self-explanatory, E-Save refers to keeping the battery fully charged for future electric-only use. The Charge mode is going to recharge the battery pack during driving.
