Volkswagen AG will further introduce seven plug-in hybrid cars

Thanks to a hand-out provided to the media at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, Volkswagen Group partially revealed its rollout plan for the next several years across its three biggest brands: Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche.

Volkswagen’s “e-mobility matrix” has Audi first up with the A3, A6, A8 and Q7 e-trons. We have no specifications other than the ones already known for the A3 model: a plug-in hybrid with a 150 hp (110 kW) 1.4-liter TFSI petrol engine mated to a 102 hp (75 kW) electric motor. This will give a combined maximum output of 204 hp (150 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

The trend at Volkswagen Group appears to be moving from standard hybrids to PHEVs (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle), evidenced in new product both from Porsche and Volkswagen. So, the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid will likely feature the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Panamera S E-Hybrid. This means we can expect it to use a 320 hp (235 kW) 3.0-liter V6 engine, a 95 hp (70 kW) electric motor and a 9.4 kWh lithium-ion battery.

We also have Volkswagen with some models on tow: the new Golf TwinDrive and Passat TwinDrive. There’s not much to say about any of these models, as we have no knowledge of specifications up until this point – but they could as well use the powertrain from the A3 e-tron, with the Passat featuring a higher output from the engines maybe, in order to compensate for its bigger mass.
