US Department of Energy awards $45m to advanced vehicle technologies

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has granted $45m in funding to 38 projects that advance the research and development of transportation technologies – aiming to improve fuel efficiency, lower transportation costs, and protect the environment.

Funding is being provided through the Advanced Vehicle Power Technology Alliance, with the US army providing a further $3m in co-funding for support of the technologies.

The 38 projects are divided into categories including advanced lightweight and propulsion materials (15 projects, $10.2m); advanced batteries (13 projects, $22.5m); power electronics (four projects, $8m); advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (two projects; $4m); and fuels and lubricants (four projects, $2.5m).
