Ulupono Initiative invests in OpConnect’s Hawaii electric vehicle charging network

EBay founder Pierre Omidyar’s Hawaii-based social investment fund Ulupono Initiative is taking a liking to the electric vehicle industry with investments in the EV charging technology in the past several months totaling a little more than $500,000.

On Tuesday, Ulupono Initiative said that it has invested $350,000 in OpConnect Hawaii, which has an end-to-end EV charging solution including charging stations, a secure wireless communications network, billing and charging station management solutions and mobile phone applications.

In March, the company said it took over the Hawaii operations of Better Place and plans to replace the Better Place charge spots with OpConnect stations by this fall.

“At Ulupono, we believe that helping consumers feel confident that they can drive where they need to go without range anxiety is critical to widespread adoption of electric vehicles,” Ulupono Initiative Managing Partner Murray Clay said in a statement. “By investing in support of those who drive EVs, we’re helping achieve our goal of reducing Hawaii’s dependence on imported oil with more efficient technology.
