Tesla opening Colorado’s 1st free charging stations for Model S cars

Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. says it will open Colorado’s first two free “Supercharger” charging stations for its Model S cars on Thursday.

The stations are in Glenwood Springs and Silverthorne along Interstate 70.

“With the latest expansion of Tesla’s Supercharger network, Model S drivers now have access to 26 Superchargers in the U.S.,” the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company (Nasdaq: TSLA) said.

The Supercharger stations are placed between large cities and popular tourist destinations, often near roadside diners and shopping centers, “to enable free long-distance travel with Model S,” Tesla said.

The free charging service is offered to newer Tesla models engineered to use the supercharging feature, and is not compatible with older models.

The stations provide half a vehicle’s charge in about 20 minutes.
