State to fund electric vehicle research

New York state has set aside $2 million this year for research and demonstration projects related to electric vehicles as part of the Charge NY program, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced. The program aims to add 3,000 vehicle charging stations across the state.

The Electric Vehicle- Enabling Technology Demonstration will accelerate the market adoption of electric vehicles, Cuomo said.

The state seeks applications from universities, research centers and businesses pursuing innovative technologies related to electric vehicles that support the expansion of the electric vehicles market and industry. Relevant projects include building electric vehicle charging stations and efforts to reduce the cost of owning electric vehicles.

There are about 640 public electric vehicle charging stations statewide and more than 5,000 electric vehicles, most of them privately owned, according to the governor.
