Schrader to supply Indian electric car maker – News – Tire Business – The Tire Dealer’s No. 1 News Source

Mass-market plug-in cars have only appeared in showrooms for three years, but startup KLD Energy Technologies thinks it’s already time for a revolution.

KLD says its updated electric motor and battery pack, called OneDrive, can get the same range from a 3-kilowatt-hour battery pack as normal motors get from a 5-kWh pack.

How does the new motor do it? OneDrive uses the same 18650-sized lithium-ion cells (they’re essentially laptop batteries) as a Tesla Model S, but its cells are a different type.

KLD says it uses power cells more similar to those used in hybrid cars, not the energy cells used in other plug-in car powertrains.

DENVER (Sept. 16, 2013) — Schrader International Inc. will supply its tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) to Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. for use on the firm’s e2o, a four-passenger two-door hatchback that Mahindra may export to Europe starting next year.

Under the agreement, Schrader will provide TPMS technology and the company’s “snap-in” valve sensor to Mahindra Reva for the e2o, which is driven by a 19-kW three-phase induction motor drawing power from lithium-ion batteries and rides on 155/70R 13 radials.

“We are very proud of our continued growth in the Indian market, and the positive relationship we’ve developed with Mahindra Reva,” said Stephen McClelland, Schrader’s managing director, electronics.

“This order is a clear validation of our strategy to provide the best in TPMS technology to our customers in all global regions,” he said.

Mahindra Reva is a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., one of India’s largest vehicle manufacturers.
