SARASOTA – Lots of drivers take pride in their cars. Yet the exhibitors at a car show outside Mote Marine Laboratory on Sunday could be best described as fully charged up.

As part of National Plug-in Day, an event in 85 cities, Mote Marine hosted “Electrify the Island” at its City Island headquarters and invited owners and vendors of electric vehicles to show the public what their automobiles can do.

“We’re very interested in sustainable technology,” said Mote spokeswoman Hayley Rutger, noting that Mote has invested in solar panels, electric car chargers and LED lighting.

“Educating people is what this is all about,” said Nigel Mould, a Mote Marine trustee and co-chairman of the event

“I haven’t bought gas for more than 2 1/2 years,” said Mould, who drives a Tesla Roadster.
