GPA weighs pros, cons of electric cars

The future of the automotive industry could soon take off on Guam with the introduction of electric vehicles.

Electric cars, unlike hybrid vehicles, are solely propelled by electric motors and powered by battery packs.

According to Guam Power Authority spokesman Art Perez, a presentation was made before the Consolidated Commission on Utilities recently by a representative from Black and Veatch, an engineering, consulting and construction company based in Kansas, that weighed the pros and cons to see if the option of electric cars would be feasible for Guam.

“This won’t be a GPA thing,” Perez said. “This will be a Guam thing.”

The Power Authority’s Energy Task Force applied for a grant from the Office of Insular Affairs to gauge the interest of the public to determine how much the infrastructure would cost. Come the new fiscal year, the task force will know whether or not they were awarded the grant.
