Gladstone teacher, students convert pickup to electric vehicle (video)

Over the past two years a group of teens at Gladstone High School have been getting hands on experience with the future of transportation.

They’ve taken a 1986 Chevrolet S10 and started transforming it into a truck that runs completely on electricity. And they’re doing all of this on their own time with English teacher, Steve Carrigg, who initially bought the old truck and invited his students to work on it with him in what has become GEVO, the Gladstone Electric Vehicle Organization. Members of the Oregon National Guard have become part of the team, donating their time, tools, and expertise.

Steve Carrigg launched a crowdfunding campaign on IncitED, a local education crowdfunding website, in order to pay for the parts necessary to complete the build. So far IncitED has helped them raise nearly $1,300 and connect with Rae EV of Sherwood who will donate 24 high quality AGM batteries, a Curtis controller and steel battery enclosures that will help make Project S10 E a reality this fall.

“This donation is a major step toward having all the components in place for GEVO to move ahead with the conversion this school year,” said GEVO adviser Steve Carrigg. “We are very excited because it gives us some great batteries to power the truck. Batteries were our biggest financial challenge.”
