Berlin to stage major electric car race

A disused airport in the German capital Berlin has been named as one of the venues to host the new FIA Formula E championship when the series gets going in 2014.

Berlin is the third city in Europe after London and Rome to stage the new electric-car extravaganza. Non-European venues include Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Putrajaya and Bangkok.

The race is scheduled to take place later in the season in 2015 at the old Tempelhof airport near the centre of Berlin.

The runways were shut down for good in 2008 and Tempelhof has since been used as a leisure facility.

“Formula E is designed to show that electric mobility is not only sensible but can be fun too,” said the city’s minister of the economy, Cornelia Yzer.
