USA: Tesla opening charging station in Woodburn

Tesla Motors opens its first Oregon Supercharger in Woodburn today, allowing owners of its Model S electric sedan to travel for free between Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene.

The Woodburn Supercharger marks the 19th in North America, but the California-based automaker has an ambitious expansion schedule.

The point, Tesla communications manager Patrick Jones said, is to address “range anxiety” — prospective purchasers’ fear that electric cars aren’t capable of long trips.

Superchargers provide about half a charge in 20 minutes.

Tesla plans to have Superchargers in most metropolitan areas by this fall.

By the end of the year, Tesla owners should be able to drive from Los Angeles to New York; Vancouver to Phoenix; and Boston to Miami. The company plans to install enough Superchargers to cover 98 percent of the United States population by 2015.
