Demand for lithium from large batteries designed to store and redistribute electricity from the grid could surge if a UK pilot project proves a success.

The project involves building Europe’s largest lithium battery, at Leighton Buzzard in south England at a cost of £13.2m ($20.4m*). When operating in January 2014, it should have a 6 megawatt (MW) capacity – the output of some power stations.

Demand for lithium from large batteries designed to store and redistribute electricity from the grid could surge if a UK pilot project proves a success.

The project involves building Europe’s largest lithium battery, at Leighton Buzzard in south England at a cost of £13.2m ($20.4m*). When operating in January 2014, it should have a 6 megawatt (MW) capacity – the output of some power stations.

The goal is to prove the commercial viability of using these batteries to improve energy efficiency and reduce spending on improving existing local electricity generating system hardware. The batteries will store electricity at substations when demand from local consumers is below available supply, and pump it out when demand exceeds output.
