Maine Utility Offers $15,000 for Companies To Buy an Electric Vehicle

Central Maine Power is now offering a $15,000 grant to commercial customers who want to buy an electric car. The program was announced at the end of July. Only CMP’s commercial customers are eligible—not residential EV buyers. Some of the funds are designated for use to install an electric car charging station.

There are several key requirements on the part of applicants who are granted the $15,000 from CMP. Organizations must take part in a two-year data-collecting exercise to help the utility better understand how electric vehicles are used in a commercial setting.

The U.S. Department of Energy said that job sites are “the next-most likely place a vehicle will spend time parked [after the home].” The ability to charge at work can potentially double a battery electric’s daily commuting range.” In February 2013, the DOE launched the Workplace Charging Challenge, which aims at increasing the number of employers offering plug-in opportunities by a factor of 10 in five years.
