Haverstraw sees electric-car chargers as visitor magnet

HAVERSTRAW — The village hopes to attract more visitors with a newly installed electric-car charging station.

Mayor Michael Kohut said the village’s acting justice, Luis Torres, helped apply for a state grant that paid for two sets of charging equipment and their installation in the village’s parking lot. The program is sponsored by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to install electric-vehicle charging stations statewide, aiming to encourage more people to buy electric cars.

Kohut said he thinks having a public charging station would attract people to the downtown, which Haverstraw has been trying to revitalize.

“If you go on the state website for charging stations, people know that they can stop in Haverstraw and get their car charged,” he said. “They park there for a couple of hours and go have dinner or something.”

Drivers can park for free up to two hours while charging. They pay charging fees through the device, Kohut said. It does not make money for the village but will not cost any taxpayer money, he said.

“I think people are interested in it,” Kohut said. “I think people are happy to see the village becoming a part of the next wave of automotive technology.”
