Few Cars Using Iowa’s Electric Charging Stations | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather | Local News

DES MOINES, Iowa — Electric vehicle charging stations have been installed at dozens of sites throughout Iowa, but so far their use is limited.

The Des Moines Register reports Iowa has about 40 stations, where electric vehicles can get an electric charge much more powerful than available from a regular home electrical outlet.

Three special chargers were installed at the Franklin Avenue Public Library in Des Moines. Since becoming fully operational in spring 2012, they’ve only been used for electric cars 13 times.

Library Director Greg Heid says he’s not discouraged. He thinks the stations will be used more as electric car sales increase.

Businesses such as Hy-Vee grocery stores also are installing more of the chargers.
