USA: PSE&G offers free car charging to employees who buy electric vehicles

Public Service Electric & Gas today opened 13 electric vehicle charging stations at its company headquarters in Newark and said it had begun offering free charging to employees who purchase plug-in cars.

While the number of electric vehicle charging stations is the highest in a single location in New Jersey, the facility is not open to the public.

Public car charging stations in New Jersey are still a rarity, with only 77 located in mostly central Jersey, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. New York, meanwhile, has 218 public car charging stations and Pennsylvania has 119.

PSE&G, the state’s largest electric utility, said employees who purchase electric vehicles and work in its Newark, Edison and Salem offices may charge their plug-in vehicles for free through July 2016.

Employees in the Newark office will also park their electric vehicles in the company lot for free. PSE&G does not offer free parking to all employees, said spokesman Paul Rosengren.
