Owners of electric cars can now get a boost while in downtown Calhoun.

The electric car chargers are fully operational at the depot, BB&T Park, and the recreation department.

The charges became operational late last week. According to Kenny Rogers, Electrical Inspector for the City of Calhoun, there has been a small amount of usage.

The chargers are from Blink and ECOtality, who received $114.8 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, and then money from partners, is conducting the overall project. The total value of the project is now at $230 million.

Calhoun was chosen to be a part of the largest deployment of electric vehicles and charge infrastructure in history, due to the city’s location along Interstate 75.

Calhoun is the first city in Northwest Ga. to be equipped with the chargers, according to a map on blinknetwork.com, which shows all the current operational chargers.

Currently, there are 66 charging stations in the Chattanooga area and 54 in the Atlanta area. There are a total of 3,779 charging stations in the U.S.

“I believe it’s the way of the future,” Rogers said.
