North West Evening Mail | Electric car charging points to be installed along Hadrian’s Wall route

A green energy company is planning a network of electric-car charging points along Hadrian’s Wall.

Charging points are rare at the moment
Solway Renewables hopes the initiative will be the first step towards a county-wide network, which should increase the take up of electric cars in Cumbria.

The Bowness-on-Solway firm is using government funding to install charging points, known as PodPoints, free of charge in domestic property including B&Bs and homes used to run a business.

It hopes to offer them to tourist attractions later in the year, albeit for a fee.

Director Suzanne Burgess said: “I’m absolutely fed up with Cumbria being left behind because we’re rural, as if that’s a valid excuse.

“As usual we’re in a chicken-and-egg situation where people won’t buy electric cars because they worry about the range and no-one will install electric charging points because there is no demand.”
