NitroBahn » Nissan Electric Car Charging Network Expansion Continues

Nissan has been working hard with charging station providers across the country for its all-electric Leaf. At present, Nissan has 265 DC quick chargers installed to recharge its Leaf electric car. It is continuing to its goal to have 600 by March 31, 2014. This news was announced by Brendan Jones, director, Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, Nissan North America in a conference call held by the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA). The company is working to make electric car ownership viable for more drivers. It is part of an expensive push by the brand aimed at making the Leaf electric car more widely accepted.

Nissan’s Leaf sales trailed the Chevrolet Volt last year until the brand made an important decision. It chose to reduce the Leaf’s price by $6,000 for the 2013 model year. The announcement came during January’s Detroit Auto Show and sales soon surpassed the Volt. The sale per month is 2,000 currently and the automaker is expecting those numbers to grow in the following months. Jones described a three-prong approach to providing chargers which include consumer-based 240-volt, level 2 for home use; community-based speaking of public infrastructure and finally Nissan is helping with the aforementioned 480-volt level 3 quick chargers.
