New Southern Connecticut State University parking garage includes electric vehicle charging stations

NEW HAVEN >> Completion of a new $17.5 million parking garage on Evergreen Avenue will make it easier for students commuting to Southern Connecticut State University to find a place to park.

Located adjacent to Jess Dow Field, the four-story garage has energy efficient LED lighting and three charging stations for students and staff with electric vehicles. The garage, which has 1,257 parking spaces, replaces a surface parking area that had been located on the site when construction was started 18 months ago, said Robert Sheeley, SCSU’s associate vice president for operations.

“It adds 20 to 25 percent, or a little over 800 spaces, to our overall parking capacity,” Sheeley said.

More than 75 percent of SCSU’s 11,000 undergraduate students are commuters, and the school allows sophomores, juniors and seniors who live on campus to have cars, said Joe Musante, a spokesman for the university.

Sheeley said the idea to integrate the charging stations for electric vehicles into the new garage came about in part because his office was contacted by several students and staff about whether it would be available when plans for the new garage were first announced.

The charging devices are 220 volts, which will allow an electric vehicle to be fully charged in four hours, Sheeley said.
