Mitsubishi i-MIEV offers minimalist ride

This week marks the beginning of the third long-term test drive under the Driving … Unplugged banner.

And in many ways, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is what many people would consider the quintessential electric vehicle, in that unlike our two previous long-term testers – the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid – this little four-door is odd looking and has very few creature comforts.

It’s sticker price – $32,998 – reflects that minimalist approach to an EV, but also underscores perhaps what these gas-less vehicles should represent; that being relatively inexpensive means of commuter transportation.

After all, are consumers who are in the market for an electric vehicle desiring a navigation system, Sirius radio and four heated seats, as is the case of the Nissan Leaf? More importantly, are they willing to pay a premium to get those luxury class goodies (all of which, ironically, take energy away from the battery that could otherwise be used to propel the vehicle).
