Gulf Coast Town Center unveils charging stations for Tesla electric cars

Without a charging station, Pinellas County resident Christal Deaton couldn’t make the trip to Miami in her Tesla Model S electric car.

But with the unveiling of eight new “super chargers” at Gulf Coast Town Center Thursday, Deaton can now drive to South Beach.

“Up until this was built I couldn’t (drive to Miami) in my car,” Deaton said. “Now I can, but I’m going to have to do something while it’s charging so I’m going to eat and shop here. “

Gulf Coast Town Center is the second location in Florida where Tesla Motors has installed these new super chargers. With increasing demand, Tesla representative Alexis Georgeson said it may not be the last.

Due to the local demographics and with Fort Myers midway between Tampa and Miami, Gulf Coast Town Center Assistant General Manager Ashleigh Henry said the mall is an “ideal location” for the chargers.

“Tesla owners are looking for convenient locations that provide unparalleled shopping, dining, and entertainment options while their vehicle charges,” Henry said. “Gulf Coast Town Center offers this and more.”

There is no fee to use the chargers and they operate on a fist come, first serve basis. However, they are only compatible with Tesla Model S cars. There are about 500 Tesla cars in Florida, Georgeson said.

“Tesla is the market leader in 100 percent electric vehicles and poised to set the standard for years to come,” Henry said.

Tesla Motors currently has stores in Dania Beach, Miami Beach, and in the Dadeland neighborhood of Miami. Florida Tesla service centers are located in Dania Beach and Tampa, with locations in Jacksonville, Orlando, and West Palm Beach coming soon, according to the Tesla Motors website.
