Workshop sheds light on electric vehicles – Santa Cruz Sentinel

SANTA CRUZ — For some, driving’s effects on the environment are a bigger concern than rising gas prices.

While electric vehicles are a part of the solution, they remain mysterious and far-fetched to most. Even those who have some information about electric vehicles worry about the prices and distance range of the relatively new technology.

Local electric vehicle owners dispelled much of the mystique for Santa Cruz residents who attended the free workshop at Ecology Action building in Santa Cruz on Thursday.

“Electric vehicles are much more real to me now,” said Live Oak electrician Mike Nickals. “I had done some research on my own before today, but with this information about leases and rentals it seems much more within my reach.”

According to Ecology Action, nearly 50 percent of greenhouse gases in Santa Cruz are from vehicle emissions, and the organization’s mission is, in part, is to educate people about alternatives.

The workshop focused on plug-in electric vehicles, which are different than hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.
