Triangle Business Journal – Tesla to install first N.C. charging station

Tesla Motors is giving its North Carolina customers reason to go on longer road trips.

CBL & Associates Properties Inc. (NYSE: CBL) is partnering with Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) to install Tesla “supercharger” stations in CBL malls across the country, including its first North Carolina station in Alamance Crossing of Burlington, N.C.

According to a map of Tesla’s future charging stations, North Carolina could see seven charging stations by the end of 2013. In the Triangle, CBL owns the Triangle Town Center mall in north Raleigh and the Cary Towne Center mall in Cary, so it’s conceivable that Tesla could also install charging stations at those locations in the future.

The Tesla “supercharger,” much like a traditional gas station, is a specialized charging station that enables four to 10 drivers of the luxury all-electric car to recharge their cars in minutes.

The Tesla “supercharger,” much like a traditional gas station, is a specialized charging station that enables four to 10 drivers of the luxury all-electric car to recharge their cars in minutes.

Tesla drivers can deliver a 50 percent charge to the Model S in just under 20 minutes, about 16 times faster than most of today’s public charging stations. Tesla offers the electricity to its supercharging-enabled Model S owners free of charge.

Jim Ward, vice president of brand development for CBL, said the partnership will place Tesla chargers at five CBL Malls across the nation by the end of the summer.

“We are confident that Tesla owners will appreciate the convenience of charging their vehicles at our well-located shopping centers that serve as the hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment in their communities,” Ward said in a statement.

Today, only nine such charging stations exist across the nation. Tesla expects to more than triple that amount by the end of the summer and cover 98 percent of the U.S. and Canada by 2015.
