The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid is set to go on sale in European markets midway through 2014.

Despite the car first appearing at the Geneva Motor Show in March as a concept, the carmaker seemed almost certain to put it into production.

And now the A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid is confirmed, with European pricing starting from around the AU$51,000 mark.

The plug-in hybrid features a 110kW 1.4 litre TFSI petrol engine developing and an electric motor, combining to offer 150kW and 350Nm of torque.

A six-speed dual-clutch e-S tronic transmission is fitted, sending power to the front wheels. Audi says the system can deliver fuel consumption figures of 1.5 l/100km, and a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds.
