Automakers Dominate Green Brands Ranking · Environmental Management & Energy News · Environmental Leader

Toyota has retained the top spot on Interbrand’s 2013 Best Global Green Brands ranking for the third year running.

Automotive brands account for four of the top five spots in this year’s ranking with innovation driving their success, according to the report, which evaluates and ranks companies on their environmental performance as well as the public’s perception of their green credentials.

After first-placed Toyota, Ford came in second, Honda third and Nissan fifth.Volkswagen ranked seventh. Although most automotive brands have invested in meeting sustainability goals and complying with regulations, those brands that have invested in creating innovative products as evidence of their commitment to sustainability — for example the Toyota Prius, Ford EcoBoost or Nissan LEAF — are receiving more recognition from consumers, Interbrand says.

Toyota continues to dominate the hybrid vehicle market, selling more than 2.9 million Prius models worldwide in 2012. Toyota is also building a low-carbon society called Toyota Ecoful Town in Toyota City, Japan. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to using reusable metal containers for shipping and distribution, Toyota is a leading example of what can result — both in terms of performance and perception — when a company makes sustainability an integral part of its overarching business strategy, Interbrand says.
