Report: EV charging stations may grow tenfold by end of decade | The Detroit News |

The number of electric-vehicle charging stations is expected to grow tenfold by the end of the decade, according to a new report compiled by IMS Research.

EV charging stations, which totaled 135,000 globally in 2011, could grow to 10.7 million by 2020, the report said, led by growing electric-vehicle markets like the U.S., China, Japan and Germany.

“While volumes may not reach the levels imagined in the hype of 2009, it is clear that there needs to be charging infrastructure in place to support this change in mobility,” said Alastair Hayfield, associate director at IMS Research, and the author of the report, in a statement.

The U.S. currently has 5,894 electric-vehicle charging stations, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

A lack of charging stations is cited as a reason for lackluster electric-vehicle sales. Through April, sales of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles comprised about a half-percent of all new vehicle sales.
