Recent Events Suggest The Electric Vehicle Will Not Be A Novelty For Much Longer

In January, Pike Research issued a report forecasting electric vehicle penetration of 1.8 million vehicles in the largest 102 US cities by 2020. A lot of observers were likely skeptical, as was I. But three facts in recent days suggest we are traveling past the milestones that suggest this scenario may indeed occur, and that Pike’s number may be modest in 7 years’ time:

1) Nissan cut the price on its Leaf by $8,000 to $28,800 (before the federal tax credit up to $7,500) and announced a $199 lease (after $1,999 down and federal tax credits.

2) Consumer Reports just rated the Tesla Model S as the best car it has ever tested with a score of 99 out of 100 (1 point off for taking time to charge).

3) After 10 years, Tesla finally reported a quarterly profit.
