Volta Industries LLC (Volta) today announced Christopher Wendel has been named Partner and Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Volta operates the Volta Network, Hawaii’s only free-to-use electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. It’s one of the largest networks of both free and pay-to-use EV charging stations on Oahu and Volta is actively expanding its presence on the mainland, with a focus on California and Arizona.
As CFO, Wendel will oversee and direct Volta’s fundraising strategy and performance with Volta’s network of corporate sponsors and community partners. Prior to Volta, Wendel served in senior positions with Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and Nomura Securities based in Europe, Asia and the U.S. With more than 20 years as a global financial services leader, Wendel also manages Octagonal Partners LLC, a firm specializing in early-stage investing.
“We are thrilled to have Chris join our Volta team,” said Scott Mercer, Volta Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “He has demonstrated his leadership and vast financial expertise on a global scale, executing successful growth and revenue strategies at some of the world’s largest and most well-known companies. Chris will play a key role as Volta prepares to expand its business beyond Hawaii in the coming year.”
Through the Volta Network, Volta designs, installs and maintains the EV charging station and provides the energy to the EV driver, all free of charge. Companies purchase a sponsorship of the vTower, an aesthetically pleasing charging kiosk that can support a sponsor both on the front and the back. The stations are designed by Volta and assembled in Hawaii. They are able to provide approximately 15 to 20 miles worth of range per hour of charging. By 2014, Volta expects to have a presence in up to 10 cities on the west coast, with more than 1000 EV charging stations.
Wendel earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service in international relations from Georgetown University and a Masters of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He speaks four languages, including German and Japanese and is a lifetime member of Mensa. Wendel resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
