Macomb Community College offered some good and better news Tuesday to displaced and laid-off workers.

The good news: College officials unveiled a new program designed to retrain workers in electric vehicle technology, a field that figures to grow significantly over the next decade.

The better news: Displaced, laid-off and underemployed workers may be eligible to have their tuition paid through a federal grant.

“Our objective with this new program … is to get you into a great-paying new job,” said Joe Petrosky, dean of engineering and advanced technology at MCC.

Officials laid out the program during a presentation Tuesday to an audience of about 75.

The program requires students to complete 28 credit hours over a one-year period. Students will take eight “core” classes and one elective. Offerings include:

• Automotive Systems.
• Introduction to Electric Propulsion Systems.

• Electronic Technology.
• Electric Vehicle Data Acquisition, Sensors and Control Systems.

Students also will complete an internship with a local company.
