Infiniti To Launch Plug-In Sports Car Within Three Years

A Nissan executive vice president has said Infiniti will launch a plug-in hybrid sports car to compete in some respects with Tesla within the next three years.

According to Nissan’s Andy Palmer speaking with Autocar, it will be based on the Emerg-e and Essence concepts and may utilize a range-extended powertrain such as the 1.2-liter engine plus two motor Emerg-e, or 3.7-liter V6 plus electric motor in the Essence concept.

Palmer said it would not use the Nissan GT-R powertrain as this was “not suitable for Infiniti.”

Actual powertrain details and images of the production vehicle have yet to be revealed, but the move is part of Nissan’s global ambitions to add to electrified vehicles now offered, and grow sales from 200,000 today to a half million annually by 2020.
