How electric cars will help drive home Manchester’s green revolution

Drivers in Greater Manchester are set to lead an electric car revolution as part of a multi-million pound green motoring bid.

Transport chiefs have launched an electric vehicle scheme that will see more than 200 charging bays placed across the region.

Locations for the bays are still being identified, but they are expected to be operational by the summer.

Plans are also afoot to create extra charging facilities at the locations including Salford University, the Trafford Centre and Manchester Central.

The scheme, known as GMEV, will be operated by a firm called Charge Your Car, which will manage the payments. Transport for Greater Manchester is leading the scheme with the leaders of the region’s ten councils.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester council and vice chairman of Greater Manchester Combined Authority, said: “Electric vehicles, from family cars to scooters or fleet vehicles, are going to transform the way we live and work.

“The take up of electric vehicles will improve air quality and reduce noise pollution and therefore create a better environment for residents and visitors to the region.
