Free electric car test drives, beer offered Sunday in Fort Collins

Northern Colorado residents will have the chance to test-drive several electric cars and get free beer on Sunday in Fort Collins.

A group called Drive Electric Northern Colorado is sponsoring the event, in which anyone with a valid driver’s license can for free test out an electric car. Drivers of legal drinking age will also, after their test drive, get a token for a free pint of specially brewed Odell Brewing Plug-In Pale Ale. The event starts at New Belgium Brewing and ends at Odell Brewing.

Drive Electric aims to jump-start the use of electric vehicles for both area commuters and businesses by developing the best technology, regulations and practices. The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery has a car charging station, as does New Belgium Brewing, and Odell on Sunday will unveil its own.

The coalition includes leaders of large electric utilities, but also General Electric, the CEOs of FedEx and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and the CEO of Nissan Motor Co. The group hopes to reduce America’s dependence on oil — particularly foreign oil — as a way to stabilize the economy and improve national security. The coalition locally includes the cities of Fort Collins and Loveland, and Colorado State University.
