As electric vehicles become more common, the need for a network of recharging stations is becoming an imperative, says Kent Rathwell.

Rathwell is president and founder of Sun Country Highway, which is leading the charge to have that infrastructure put in place across Canada.

“Our goal is to electrify 90 per cent of Canada’s highways this year,” said Rathwell, who lives in Saskatoon.

Rathwell and his team, along with a pair of high-end Tesla vehicles, was in Saskatoon to show off the recharging station put in place at the Bessborough Hotel.

The company embarked on a national drive across the country in December, travelling more than 10,000 kms from coast to coast in their electric vehicles.

“Most of the electric vehicle companies have focused on urban centres — L.A., New York — but we wanted to actually prove something and make Canada a leader,” Rathwell said. “To drive it in the middle of winter proved it was possible and now Canada is the global leader in highway electrification.”

Rathwell envisions people charging up their electric or hybrid vehicles not only at home, but while having lunch or coffee or going for groceries.

“Ultimately it is having other companies, like the Bessborough, buy in,” he said, adding “We have Canada’s first retailer coming on stream real soon.”
