USA: Lincoln considers electric-vehicle charging stations

LINCOLN — The city of Lincoln is working on plans for electric-vehicle charging stations, including one downtown and eventually on Interstate 55.

Mayor Keith Snyder said he has long been interested in the idea, and now the pieces could be coming together. Eaton Corp. in Lincoln has expressed interest in participating in a community project. The company manufactures charging stations.

Snyder said the city expects to have a proposal to Eaton by the end of this month.

“Eaton is a great corporate citizen,” Snyder said. “They are great supporters of things that happen in Lincoln.

“We thought this might be an opportunity to see if Eaton would at least consider funding a proposal to do one or two car-charging stations in the community.”

Brian Bergen of the Lincoln and Logan County Development Partnership said students at Heartland Community College in Lincoln have expressed interested in a charging station downtown.

“It’s nice to promote environmental issues as far as being a clean community,” Bergen said.

Coming from an environmental science class, the students wanted to see a green energy source in Lincoln, Bergen said.
