USA: Free Charging Stations For Electric Cars Now at Sawyer Point

Filling up for free is now a reality for some car owners in Cincinnati. Today the city opened its first electric or hybrid car charging station. It’s in the Sawyer Point parking lot.

Local 12’s Tiffany Wilson explains how an off-the-cuff comment sparked the station.

No credit card needed at this pump — these charging stations are free to electric car owners. “You come in here, you plug up, you hear the beep, it is just that simple.”

It takes three to four hours for a car to receive a full charge. “Remember there’s three miles of park here, you can park, go enjoy the park, get into your parked car and go home.”

That’s a lot of park references — with good reason. These charging stations all started when Director of Cincinnati Parks Willie Carden made an offhand comment to Mayor Mark Mallory. “We were having some casual conversation about how people were buying more electric cars … Willie took off with it.”
