USA: Electric car chargers coming to Ralphs stores

Electric car chargers will be installed at three Ralphs stores in San Diego and 35 other of the grocery stores across Southern California, parent company Kroger has announced.

The chargers are provided by ECOtality through a public-private partnership — theEV Project — designed to gather and analyze driving and charging data to help improve and expand the nation’s electric vehicle infrastructure.

In all, Kroger said it will add more than 200 charging stations in Phoenix, San Diego and Los Angeles. It also has committed to installing 25 direct-current “Fast Chargers” that can fully recharge a car in a matter of minutes rather than hours.

The deal indicates continued interest among retailers in accommodating electric vehicle drivers, who rely on public charging stations to extend the range of vehicles that can run out of power after 80 miles or less, depending on battery size.
