Toyota reveals results of plug-in hybrid trial

A three year trial of Toyota’s plug-in hybrid technology has now been completed: and the results suggest that plug-in hybrid vehicles could have a serious impact on fuel economy.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (pictured) was the centre of a demonstration project in Strasbourg, France, which saw 70 of the vehicles provided to the city. Data was then recorded using 145 charging points around the area, revealing that the hybrids travelled a total of 2.485million miles over the three years.

It appears the impact that plug-in vehicles could have on fuel economy is staggering: the vehicles achieved an average of a 46 per cent reduction in fuel consumption when compared to petrol vehicles of a similar size. They were charged an average of 1.1times per day. The results also show that there is a direct correlation between a higher number of charges and lower fuel consumption
