TI tests electric vehicle charging stations at 12 Texas sites

Texas Instruments Inc. is installing 46 electric-vehicle charging stations for its employees at 12 company locations statewide, and will decide at the beginning of next year whether to keep them.

This is at no cost to the Dallas chip maker, as the project is funded through the federal Department of Energy via a stimulus grant of $114.8 million.

“The stations at the TI campuses are designed to supplement home chargers, and charge $1 per hour, the standard rate,” TI said on a corporate blog earlier this month.

The TI sites that will get the vehicle chargers include Sherman, which will receive four, and Richardson, which is getting two.

The “fast-charging stations” will be operated by a San Francisco-based firm called ECOtality on a system it owns called the Blink network. ECOtality works directly with the feds on the project and finds businesses such as TI to provide locations for charging stations, according to a TI spokeswoman.
