Fire service adds Nissan Leaf to its vehicle fleet – Latest news – Sunderland Echo

MOVING ON: Andie MacKay from CDDFRS receiving the Leafs keys from Kevin Fitzpatrick of Nissan.
A FIRE service has plugged the gap in its fleet of pool cars with the help of car maker Nissan.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has taken delivery of an electric-powered Leaf from the firm’s Sunderland plant, after a deal between the organisations.

It follows on from a decision from the emergency service that it would consider using the electric and zero-emission vehicles as part of a review into its cars.

The Leaf will allow the service to save money.

Each of the Leaf’s 100 miles per charge costs as little as £1.91, rather than the equivalent of a tank of fuel.

Andie MacKay, head of asset management at the service, said: “As a fire and rescue service, we have many legal objectives relating to community protection and response.

“These include environmental protection resulting from operational activity.
