Electric car bill easily passes in the Washington House with bipartisan support

Washington lawmakers Friday approved a bill that would make life easier for owners of electric vehicles looking to power up.

Senate Bill 5849, which passed 84-12 in the House of Representatives, would impose a $124 fine on those who park in a designated charging station while not charging their vehicle. The fine would apply to all vehicle owners, including those with electric cars.

Rep. Ed Orcutt, R-Kalama, spoke in support of the bill before the vote on the floor.

“It should be a normal common courtesy,” he said. “It’s kind of sad that we have to do this, but it’s become clear that we need to.”
