Canada: Green Car winner to be revealed

A plug-in hybrid, three conventional hybrids and a highly efficient internal combustion vehicle are among the finalists for the first Canadian Green Car Award.

They include the Ford C-Max Energi, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Mazda3 and Volkswagen Jetta Turbocharged Hybrid.

The finalists were selected by members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.

The competition placed heavy emphasis on fuel economy and emissions was well as other environmental features such as use of recycled or naturally sourced materials.

The winner will be announced Friday at the Green Living Show in Toronto.

ACTOR BACKS UAW DRIVE

Actor and activist Danny Glover is lending his name and star power to the United Auto Workers’ latest attempt at organizing Nissan employees in the United States.

The Japanese automaker employs more than 5,000 workers at its assembly plant in Canton, Miss., a right-to-work state. Last month, Glover launched Concerned Students for a Better Nissan College Tour, which has been staging a series of demonstrations aimed at countering the automaker’s “antiunion campaign.”

Glover, best known for roles in such films as the Lethal Weapon series and The Colour Purple, was the recipient of the 2011 UAW Social Justice Award.

He has been a vocal supporter of organizing efforts in the U.S., Canada and other countries.

In 2005, Glover joined Unite Here Canada, a union movement aimed at raising the standard of living among hotel employees.

FIVE PER CENT OF U.S. DRIVERS ON CELLS

At any given moment, about 660,000 drivers – or five per cent of American drivers – are talking on handheld cellphones, according to a 2012 survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
