Asia: Motor maker, researcher partner to tap electric vehicle market

Taipei, April 10 (CNA) Teco Electric and Machinery Co., the leading motor manufacturer in Taiwan, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Wednesday to cooperate on the development and manufacture of special electric vehicles with an international competitive edge.

Under the MOU, the ITRI will assist the private company in designing niche motor systems, developing efficient production validation processes and power packages (motor drivers and controllers), accessing overseas markets, and training personnel.

The MOU was signed by Teco Chairman C. K. Liu and ITRI Executive Vice President Wu Tung-chuan and witnessed by officials of the Department of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Wu said he will be happy to see Teco launch mass production of vehicles made with ITRI technology, and expand its sales overseas.

Meanwhile, Liu said the new partnership will help to improve his company’s capability in the development of electric vehicles and production of power kits.

It represents Teco’s first step toward globalization, he added.

Initially, the company will take aim at the Southeast Asia and Greater China markets, he said.

Liu also said Teco will take its supply chain to China this year, making an investment that is aimed at producing special electric vehicles based on the market demand there.
