Los Gatos to Add Five Electric Vehicles to Municipal Fleet

Cars made available to town at a reduced cost through partnership with private sector companies.

Los Gatos will lease five all-electric vehicles at a reduced cost through a partnership with several private sector companies, town officials announced Tuesday afternoon in a press release.

Active International, a media trade company; Mitsubishi Motors of North America, and Mike Albert Leasing have teamed up to offer municipalities in California the opportunity to lease the vehicles for either a one-year no-cost lease, or a three-year reduced cost lease, the release stated.

Los Gatos resident and former Los Gatos Ferrari business owner Scott Cote approached town government officials first with the unique offer, said Los Gatos Assistant Town Manager Pamela Jacobs.

The offer stems from an arrangement between Active and Mitsubishi, whereby the vehicles are payment for services the automobile company received from Active, she said.

Active is in turn “donating” the lease of the vehicles to municipalities, she added.

The town will lease five new i-MIEV ES four-door hatchbacks for a three-year period, with the first year covered by Active and three-quarters of the second year covered by a rebate from the State of California for the no-emission vehicles, she explained.

Three of the cars will be used for volunteers in the Volunteers in Policing program to run errands and make deliveries around town, she said.

The other two will be pool vehicles available to town staff for travel to meetings in the county and for local business purposes, she stated.

“The addition of these vehicles to the town fleet will help the town to meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets,” Jacobs
